‘Doctor’s Run,’ a voluntary organization of physicians, organized a landmark marathon race in Dhaka’s iconic Hatirjheel area on Saturday morning to enhance public awareness about the vital health benefits of running and cardiovascular disease prevention.
A total of 1,200 doctors joined the marathon titled “RUN FOR HEALTHY HEART,” starting at 5:45 AM and concluding at 7:30 AM, led by Race Director Dr. Uzzwal Kumar Mallick.
On average, 562 people die every day in Bangladesh due to heart disease. On a yearly basis, around 992,736 new patients are diagnosed with heart-related conditions—equivalent to roughly 2,720 new cases daily.
Cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, now account for 21.12% of all deaths in the country. At present, an estimated 10.26 million people in Bangladesh are living with cardiovascular conditions.
The statistical data also reveals a stark disparity between urban and rural populations: the death rate in urban areas stands at 24.09%, significantly higher than the 15.07% recorded in rural areas, indicating greater cardiovascular risk in urban environments.
Particularly concerning is the sharp rise in heart attacks among young people, a trend experts describe as highly alarming. Health specialists attribute this surge to lifestyle changes, unhealthy diets, obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a lack of physical activity.
These findings highlight the urgent need for public awareness, preventive healthcare measures, and active lifestyle changes across Bangladesh.
